Kelly Flynn was nice enough to send along some statistics regarding the 2008 recycling program in Broken Bow. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees (35’ tall), 2 barrels of oil (enough fuel to run the average car for 1260 miles or from Dallas to Los Angeles), 4100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for 6 months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space (one family size pick-up truck) and 60 pounds of air pollution. (Trash to Cash, 1996)

With the proposed implementation of the business recycling program increased paper tonnage could be saved. No word yet on whether the program is on track to exceed these numbers in 2009 but when the numbers are available we will compare and contrast the 2009 effort with the 2008 effort.
